Inside a lesson
Real fragments of lessons in different formats: difficult topics taken apart without rote learning, interactive material, and the focus kept on the result.
Who teaches
I have been teaching for more than twenty years. From the age of sixteen I lived in the United Kingdom, where for a long time I taught English to newly arrived immigrants. In time I developed my own method, built around every language skill rather than one.
I have interpreted at the highest level of government — for the Governor of the Rostov Region and the Mayor of Rostov-on-Don during visits by Scottish delegations, and at international sporting events including the Russian President's Judo Cup. For three years I was personal interpreter to the King of Nigeria, John Feyvors, and to the Indian author Jayapataka Swami.
For seven years I worked in external relations on landmark projects in Rostov-on-Don: the city's largest printing house, together with Graphic Web Systems B.V. of the Netherlands, Scholpp of Germany and EAE of England; and the Splash sports and leisure complex, with TREE AG of Germany, PricewaterhouseCoopers of Austria, Montana Snowcenter of the Netherlands and SnowTek of Finland.
I spent three years lecturing in English at the Faculty of Foreign Languages of Rostov State Pedagogical University. That experience is what let me open my own school, Best English.
The method
Every lesson gives time to speaking, reading, translation, listening and grammar. The result you are after — understanding the language and speaking it — is built from all five, not one. Speaking sessions hold a topic without slipping back into your own language, which is how new words actually stick. Grammar sessions do allow your own language, because that is how you grasp exactly when a tense is used.
In my view, total immersion is not sensible for grammar. Two things are asked of the student: come regularly, and do the homework. I will say it plainly — learning a language takes effort, like anything worth having. I will help, guide, prompt and organise the process properly. The rest is down to you.
Russian
Russian lessons build literacy: reading, writing, understanding a text and speaking it out loud. The lessons also work on the thinking underneath — logic, memory, attention, concentration, and the ability to reason towards a conclusion and solve a problem.
Translation
Documents, articles, website copy, proofreading and editing of advertising, print and technical material. Interpreting at meetings and negotiations, online or by phone, linguistic support for projects, and interpreting at ceremonies.
Written translation: 50% in advance, the balance on delivery. Interpreting: paid in full on completion.
